Ordering Fields on List APIs

Good Morning, had a quick question relating to the ordering field on the List APIs specifically
work_items
Iv been looking at the ordering field and it is driving me crazy. It seems like it doesn't do anything? Iv tried using it in on multiple fields.
Ex.
/api/v1/wbs/work_items/?limit=10&ordering=modified
